This weekend I went on a bit of a food and health documentary rampage on Netflix, enough so that the bf asked me to change it up so we don’t develop some kind of overly-healthy eating issue where the two of us are living off lettuce and water alone.
One of the documentaries we watched was Hungry for Change, a film that focuses on the negative effects of processed foods, sugars, artificial sweeteners, MSG and other preservatives. I already know what products to avoid in the grocery store (basically every aisle except the produce area), but hearing the statistics in the film about everything added into our foods will make you rethink your grocery list, eating out and those late night fast food runs. Yes Kate, I am talking to you.
Key Messages from Hungry for Change:
+ Sugar is as addictive as heroin. A little extreme of a statement, but they go into depth on how much sugar we consume a year, how it becomes addictive and its effect on children. They also discuss the science behind how diet soda actually makes you heavier in the long run, which somehow still shocks people to learn.
+ Avoid aspartame, MSG, HPCS & Heavily Processed Diet and Fat Free Foods. Seems like a no-brainer but you would be surprised the ingredients lurking in some of your fave “healthy” items. Read your labels. If you can’t pronounce your ingredients don’t eat it.
+ Fresh is best. Through eating a diet consisting mainly of fresh produce you can literally ‘eat yourself beautiful’, gifting yourself better looking skin in the process. Who doesn’t want to cure their body from the inside out and have glowing skin? I know I do. Many of the experts and authors interviewed in this documentary cured themselves by eating fresh and juicing.
+ Add freshly squeezed vegetable juices into your day. Similar to Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead we cannot escape the benefits of straight shots of veggies by juicing.
+ The importance of greens, gelatinous foods like chia seeds and aloe vera, parsley and cilantro. I never bought any of these items on the regular, but we stocked up on them yesterday after watching the film.
