My Top Healthy Hair Care Tips

February 24, 2021

Today we are talking all things hair. I didn’t always have healthy hair, but it has changed over the years as I have changed my lifestyle, tried out different products and developed a routine that keeps my hair healthy all year round even in the hot Florida sun.

Diet // You knew I was going to say this one. The number one change I have seen in my hair comes down to my diet. When I changed to a plantbased dominant lifestyle, my hair became thicker, grew faster, broke less and looks healthier than ever before. When I started incorporating the Lean Green Smoothie (LGS) every single morning I actually saw my hair and nails growing quicker than before and with not as much breakage. I would say that my number #1 tip comes down to eating whole foods as much as possible and incorporating the LGS every single day. For more information on the LGS, check out my Ebooks.

Frequency & Less Heat // I only wash my hair every 3 days or so depending how long it can go before it starts to looks too greasy. Some months it can go longer than others and also times of the month, so I believe a lot of our oil production is down to hormones. I never straighten or curl my hair anymore so I don’t use heat tools on it which can lead to breakage. I blow my roots dry (shop my hair dryer) with my head flipped over to get them to dry straight and then blast the ends quickly, running my hands through the ends of my hair to naturally straighten it with a hair oil, then let the rest air dry over night.

Dry Shampoo // I LOVE dry shampoo for soaking up grease, volumizing and covering my roots. When my hair looks super voluminous it is because I have dry shampoo in it. Because I go many days without washing my hair using dry shampoo is key. There are two non toxic ones I like: Act & Acre and Ren Jord. To be totally transparent I do still also use Batiste brand, because it just works.

Shampoo & Conditioner // This is one place I haven’t yet gone 100% non toxic yet because I have yet to find a clean shampoo that gets my scalp clean, I hate how it feels when they don’t work. I literally can’t get my hand through my hair and it doesn’t feel clean, so I always end up back on Loreal for shampoo because I know it works and I don’t wash my hair that often anyway. For conditioner I pick up non-toxic options at TJ Maxx and currently am using the Acure pumpkin conditioner which I really like.

Oil // After I wash my hair, I apply an oil to the ends only and then comb it out with a wide tooth comb. Any oil works, you could even use coconut oil from your kitchen but this is the hair oil I have been using lately. This is key in helping my hair dry straight. If I am feeling extra lazy or am on vacation with no hair dryer, I will continually run my hands through my hair with the oil to air dry it straight vs. using a hair dryer.

Color // I finally found a hair colorist who colors my blonde exactly how I like it which is a very heavy highlight and a bright blonde (no yellow tones). We do not bleach the roots when we highlight which helps promote health and I get my highlights done every 6 weeks, alternating between a partial and a full when needed. I don’t like to cut my hair often so I maybe have her trim my hair two times a year.

Tips & Tricks // I only use a silk hair tie vs. a regular hair tie, especially when sleeping, getting ready or in the sauna, and when working out if possible. I love to twist my hair into a bun or two buns and wrap them with the scrunch or clips and then when I let it down it has a natural wave to it.

I hope you love these hair tips and they help you with your hair. Let me know in the comments section anything I missed or if you have additional hair-related questions I can answer.
