Haute or Not? GG Crackers.

February 28, 2018
Today we’re going to break down GG Crackers. Haute or Not? If you have never heard of GG crackers, GG Scandanvian Crisp Crackers or “GGs” have been around for over 80 years, but they were recently made more popular by the F-Factor diet. I learned about them from my favorite blogger The Skinny Confidential when she interviewed the founder of the F-Factor diet on her podcast. Naturally I had to buy them immediately and test them all out. They were actually a huge hit with my husband, which I was surprised about as they don’t taste like anything. Literally the first time I tried them it was like eating air lol. Cardboard texture, air flavor. Being completely transparent here – GG crackers are pretty bland, but I feel that the sunflower version has the most flavor of them all if I had to choose one. I haven’t tried the raisin cinnamon flavor yet though so maybe they have more taste. Anyway, the draw of GG crackers is they are FULL of fiber – 4 grams per cracker to be exact. Because of this, GGs have been attributed to being a “weight loss” cracker because they move food through your intestine, aiding digestion while also making you feel full. I agree, they do keep you regular however, if you are eating a plantbased whole foods diet anyway you should be pretty regular anyway. So what else is in them? Wheat Bran, Whole Grain Rye Flour & Salt. I love that GGs have few ingredients, but if you are gluten intolerant GG crackers DO have gluten in them, so these might not be the best choice for you. My husband deals with bloating from flour (we think) but these do not bother him so I am sure this is an individual experience as everything is. GGs can be hard to find in stores, I have only found them at my local Whole Foods and they are sold out a lot as they are all the rage right now. If you really want to try them, you can order in bulk on their website or through Amazon. I wanted to try them first before ordering a million GGs personally. There is nothing more I hate than being super excited about something, ordering it before trying and then being let down. #libraproblems If you want to get a similar cracker and/or avoid gluten I rounded up a few options for you that are similar to GGs. GG ALTERNATIVES // An alternative that has 2g of fiber per 2 crackers are the Wasa Fiber Crispbreads. For options that are Gluten Free I go with Marys Gone Crackers(3 grams in 13 crackers) or Flackers (7 grams of fiber per 6 crackers). DIY and make your own gluten free flax crackers! HAUTE OR NOT? // If you are looking for an easy snack and want to get more fiber in your diet, GGs are not a bad option. Where they go badly is all the shit you put on them since they don’t have a lot of flavor. You could be getting a ton of fiber, but if you are loading them with cream cheese, eggs and mozzarella cheese to make “GG pizzas” I feel like you are counteracting the positive benefits of the cracker so they cancel each other out. Many of the recipes with GGs are not vegan or vegetarian so if you can keep your GGs as clean and plantbased as possible then I am ok with them in moderation. Bottom Line: I don’t think you need to be forming your diet around a cracker. HEALTHIER TOPPINGS FOR YOUR GGs // Hummus with veggies, Olive tapenade, Kite Hill cream cheese, Almond butter with banana. Have you tried GGs?
