Skin School with Dr. Barbara Sturm and Hailey Bieber

April 9, 2020

I watched Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Skin School yesterday with Hailey Bieber (obsessed with her style and her skin) and they shared so many good skincare tips and tricks. Of course I took copious notes during the video and there were so many good gems in their discussion I wanted to share my takeaways with you. Here is what I learned:

Reduce Inflammation / stress, exposure to sun, irritating skincare ingredients, diet (inflammatory foods), drinking alcohol and smoking, and pollution.

Exfoliate / While she believes exfoliation is important (especially for acne-prone skin) she says we are too harsh with our skin and you only need to exfoliate twice a week. Skin Tip // use modified rice starch as your exfoliant, which can actually shrink pores.

Hydrate / No need to double cleanse or use harsh exfoliators that strip our natural skin barrier which removes hydration. Avoid long hot showers, sun, stress & harsh ingredients (like acid peels, which remove healthy skin and we absorb the ingredients within them which isn’t good).

Hailey’s Tips:
+ Apply products after shower while skin is still damp.
+ Use EWG to read about your products, but know that not everything marketed “organic” and “clean” means it is actually clean.
+ Hails was honest that genetics also play a large role in skin.
+ Use diaper rash cream for under eye dark circles!

Dr. Sturm Tips:
+ Wash face twice a day am & pm, wash pillows frequently and don’t touch your face.
+ You need a cleanser with a ph of 5 – 5.2 with no acids/fragrance or alcohol.
+ She doesn’t love Vitamin C because above 5% damages your skin barrier (study), her products use 2% or less.
+ Stay away from makeup as much as possible and makeup brushes which can lead to acne. If you are wearing makeup make sure to mix it with your skincare or apply your skincare first before the makeup.
+ And please, no makeup wipes which cause micro injuries, Dr. Sturm said just use your cold cream / moisturizer to remove your makeup!
+ Zinc is good for acne and topically for dark under eye circles

I loved that Dr. Sturm discussed staying away from processed meat and dairy as we take on the antibiotics from the animal products and to avoid refined breads, pastas and sugars which can lead to acne and breakouts. It all starts from within.

Dr. Sturm also threw out the question: Why Do We Age? Answer: Our cells divide. We need to do everything to keep them functioning through what we eat, to stress levels, hydration, less pollution, etc. This is why she puts “telomerase” into all of her products to stop and reverse aging as it keeps telomeres (the end caps of our DNA) from shortening / aging. I have spoken about telomeres before on the podcast and other ways to lengthen telomeres naturally is through intermittent fasting and sauna usage. If you are interested in listening to them I have linked to them below.
