Tips & Tricks to Eating Plantbased while Traveling

February 7, 2020

Happy Friday from the British Virgin Islands! I have been sharing what I have been eating while here on my Instagram @hautehealthy and wanted to break down my top tips and tricks to staying consistent on a plantbased diet while traveling. I feel like when we are on vacation you kind want to say F*** it and then you eat badly, drink a ton and feel like crap when you get home, so then you start a “cleanse” or “detox” of not eating anything to feel better for your poor choices. Well – that USED to be what I did, but over the past few years I have found my groove with sticking to a clean plantbased diet no matter where I am.

Bring healthy food with you. You can pack anything that is not fresh produce with you on flights so we brought Elmhurst milk, GoMacro bars, organic coffee and dried fruit along with us which saved us on our trip and set us up for success each day. Bring your favorite snacks so you don’t have to eat out every single meal. One time I even brought GG crackers and capers and they let me bring them through.

Rent a place with a kitchen. We lean more towards Air BnB’s than traditional hotels because you have more space and a kitchen which allows you to keep and cook your own food. Not only does it save you money, but you steer clear of foods heavily cooked in oils or with ingredients that aren’t vegan like butters, creams, etc. Of course, you want to enjoy life and not try to be “perfect” so I allow myself to eat out occasionally when on vacation too and try not to worry about how my food was prepared. In the BVI’s I was able to get a vegetable Roti, salads, vegetable soups and many places have vegetarian pasta choices but it is pretty expensive so we have been cooking more at home than eating out. $35 for pasta with veggies? Not on my watch.

Check out your local grocery stores. No matter where you are they have local stores that take debit cards and you would be surprised what you can find! Here in the BVI’s they have almond milk, vegan burgers and tons of fresh produce. I have been making my No Tuna Salad from my ebook and pairing it in lettuce cups or on bread every day for lunch which saves us a lot of money and many unnecessary calories.
